The Book Thief -FINAL ASSIGNMENT- part 1c

"She had stolen a book, some one had seen her. she reacted. appropriately."

This quotation represents the beginning of the book. Liesel being the book thief was a large part of the book and this was truly the start. The 'some one had seen her' bit of the quote makes the reader nervous. The uncertainty and fear is part of the characters everyday lives in the beginning of the novel. Finally the 'she reacted. Appropriately.' Is the continuation of the novel. The story isn't done yet.
This quote is a very good representation of the beginning of the book since, it is a summery of the beginning. This is the whole starting point. The quote represents that.

"The situation of Rosa and Hans hubbermann, very sticky indeed. In fact frightfully sticky."

This represents the second quarter of the book. As the first quote represented the start of things, this second quote shows that a true problem has formed and that chaos and destruction are on their way. Things are starting to pick up now. People are very worried.

pg 242 "I would that Rudy died....Even death has a heart"

This flash forward part of the book is at the beginning of part 3. You don't really know how serious everything is becoming until you read this passage. It grips you to keep reading and it is the perfect lead to part 4. You think Rudy can't die, he simple can't but then again death would know. It makes you realize how fragile the situation really is. The entire section three takes on more meaning as you hold on to how much everything counts here.

"I saw him hip-deep in some icy water chasing a book...He makes me cry" 531

It is the end. After everything the characters have been through it's over. The whole section 4, it's climax, all of death's flash forward that gave you the sense of approaching doom. It has all arrived. The is it.

  1. These four quotes take us through the book focussing on significant signposts. You have made good choices.
