The Book Thief -FINAL ASSIGNMENT- part 1c

"She had stolen a book, some one had seen her. she reacted. appropriately."

This quotation represents the beginning of the book. Liesel being the book thief was a large part of the book and this was truly the start. The 'some one had seen her' bit of the quote makes the reader nervous. The uncertainty and fear is part of the characters everyday lives in the beginning of the novel. Finally the 'she reacted. Appropriately.' Is the continuation of the novel. The story isn't done yet.
This quote is a very good representation of the beginning of the book since, it is a summery of the beginning. This is the whole starting point. The quote represents that.

"The situation of Rosa and Hans hubbermann, very sticky indeed. In fact frightfully sticky."

This represents the second quarter of the book. As the first quote represented the start of things, this second quote shows that a true problem has formed and that chaos and destruction are on their way. Things are starting to pick up now. People are very worried.

pg 242 "I would that Rudy died....Even death has a heart"

This flash forward part of the book is at the beginning of part 3. You don't really know how serious everything is becoming until you read this passage. It grips you to keep reading and it is the perfect lead to part 4. You think Rudy can't die, he simple can't but then again death would know. It makes you realize how fragile the situation really is. The entire section three takes on more meaning as you hold on to how much everything counts here.

"I saw him hip-deep in some icy water chasing a book...He makes me cry" 531

It is the end. After everything the characters have been through it's over. The whole section 4, it's climax, all of death's flash forward that gave you the sense of approaching doom. It has all arrived. The is it.

The book Thief Issues for discussingand responding

1. I believe death symbolizes what the people in this time would be feeling. If they had to pick a narrator to tell their story death would be it. When you think of war and fighting many of you would think of death. Death can flash forward to what will happen. Look back and bring a totally new perspective most people haven't read from.

War=Death that is the symbolism.

Death sees people at their best and worst. Ugliness and Beauty. He says he is haunted. I can understand that. Though I don't think death would admit it, he wants to be human. In all our ugliness and worsts and hatred, we are beautiful becomes we live. Ugliness is beautiful since it's part of life. Every part of life is beautiful. To witness it and never be a part of it must be horrible. I pity this books narrator. Ugliness and beaut is the same thing because unlike death, are contrasts and imbalances are what make living beautiful. Our contrast and shades ARE LIFE. Every human has lived at one point or will live at one point. Being a human means you are many things you cannot be just beautifully you cannot be just ugly. To qualify as a human you have many different colors.

2. It's ironic that Liesel steals books because, life is one infinitive never ending story. There will never be enough tree's in the world to make paper for it's pages. Our lives are OUR stories, to steal and read another because you love adventure, or want an escape from the world your living in is ironic because you don't have to steal one. Your living it.

Book Thief -FINAL ASSIGNMENT- part 1b

Dear diary,

papa got me, you for my birthday. Your so pretty with your white paper just ready for me to fill with my words. I'm so excited I am going to write all my stories in you. Mabye papa will help... We can even write some of his achordian music! Today when I was playing soccer with rudy I scored two goals, in celebration we're going to go to the mayors house again... I need something to help keep me busy. A book would be great, the hardest part is going to be listening to rudy's stomach complaining on the way. That boy is always hungry. If people could eat paper you my dear diary would already be eaten, I'm afraid. Here is a bit of a story I was thinking of writing.

The girl started digging at sunrise. She dug through the day, with her bare hands, never stopping. She kept digging even when here hands were raw and bleeding even when her sisters and brothers begged her to stop. They had enough pain from the war they didn't need this.
For three sunrises and sunsets she didn't stop. Her whole village was asleep when she finished. Light began to shine from the hole she had made. It went all the way to the center of the earth where a little sun was. The golden rays filled the air. The soldjers stopped fighting, the people woke up. The gunfire stopped. All because of this girl had dug deep enough to find hope.

I know it's not very good but it's an idea I had and didn't want to forget. Anyway Rudy's here so I'm going hopefully returning with a new book.
Bye

I chose Liesel during this time in her life because she finally became the book thief. Since this Is (you could say) the center of the entire book. It seemed appropriate. Since what happens repeatedly in Leisle's life is stealing books, and generally being passionate about literature, that's where I got my general Idea about the journal topic from.
She of course is vital to the story, because death is the narrator and he was interested in her and her life. Without her this story would not exist.

It's November and just starting to get chilly outside. Yesterday our neighbor's the hubbermann's were basically dragging a girl into their house. She kicked up such a fuss. I didn't really mind though she was kind of pretty. i asked Mama what was going on and she told me the girl was an orphan that the Hubbermanns adopted and that when she started coming to school I should be nice to her. My little brother's asking me if I have anything to eat. He's making me really hungry, talking about cookies and cake... Sigh boy oh boy Am I hungry. I wonder if I go over to the girls house to say hi, they might offer me something to eat.
...No such luck she's making such noise in there I dought they could here me if I yelled at the top of my lungs...
...and I am back. If your wondering where I went I ran outside to play soccer with some kids on my street turns out they heard the screaming nd swearing to. If she ever decides to come out she's in net.

I chose Rudy because in The Book Thief you never got to find out what was going on in his head, I thought it would be fun to see how he thinks. I chose this time because it was the begging of it all. The author didn't go into much detail about what everyone else thought other than Liesle, So I reread the passage and after reading the entire book, knew how Rudy would probably think.

The Book Thief -FINAL ASSIGNMENT- part 1

I chose this photo because it is the perfect way to show people as best we can what World war one was actually like. Other than the fact that this picture is of a German trench, it relates to the book thief because of Hans Hubbermann. As we all know Hans Hubbermann escaped death in two wars. The author, thank God didn't spend AS much time as he could have describing what Hans went through. Every one says a picture is worth a thousand words. The author could have written a million words describing what Hans and his family AND what all the other people in the war went through. What they have seen but this picture Sums it up as best as any picture could.

A picture can represent a million word and a word can can represent a million pictures but words and pictures can give different perspectives depending on who took the picture or who wrote the words and from your own experience. A picture doesn't leave much room for imagination since it's 'information' is solid and physically there. However if you read a passage describing the scene you create the image with the help of the words. If you read it again and see something you missed your image can change.

I choose this photograph because it reminded me of the Book thief's main character Liesel. I know the girl in this photograph is not blond and liesels clothes (at least how I imagened while reading) were in slightly better shape but putting that aside there are many reasons why I chose this photo.
Before I saw this photo I didn't visualize Liesel looking like this at all, but something about this girls expression struck me. Originally I imagined Lesiel petite, with a light build, and obviously blond hair. However this expression in the photo makes me think that this would be how liesel would look to an utter stranger she saw in the street. Not shy at all looking you straight in the eye. She has a bit of arrogance in her expression. Liesel is a very strong person, and it's very hard to find a photograph where some one would look strong, emotionally. The slight edge of arrogance on this girls expression did the best job out of all the photo's I looked at. Liesel is a young girl and most girls her age don't really know who they are, Liesel did not give me that impression. Maybe because living in this time of war she was forced to grow up quicker than most people. She doesn't radiate confidence but she knows who she is and that is a huge part of her personality. She has known so much sadness and fear in her life, and though I would wish it on no one it made her meet important people who shaped who she is. She is a better person because of them. A stronger person because of her experience.
